Americans spend up to 7 hours each day consuming personal, social, and entertainment digital content. In fact, employees estimate they spend 2 hours each day while at work using their smartphone for non-work purposes, according to surveys conducted by Michael Mercier. His research has revealed that smartphone distraction in the workplace doesn’t just kill productivity, it also causes workplace accidents and interpersonal conflict.
In addition to impacting our work environment, spending such an excessive amount of time on digital devices impacts our lives outside of work, and it negatively affects our social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being.
In this seminar we will learn what makes digital content so addictive, the research on how excessive screen time affects our work and home environments, how breaks from phones benefit us, and what we can do to reduce our screen time and to redirect our energy to activities that give us a greater return on time spent.
Michael Mercier is president of Cincinnati-based Screen Education, which addresses issues at the intersection of digital technology and human optimization, including overcoming digital addiction, the impact of the news media, and how to use AI chatbots for self-directed learning.
